When someone points a gun at you and tells you to get into their van, it can help to have thought in advance about what you would do in that type of situation. It seems at first like an easy decision. They want you to get in the van, and they have a gun. So you get in, right?

Wrong.

Ask yourself, why would someone with a gun want you to get in their van? It’s either to kill you or to do something else bad to you. If it’s to kill you, or to do something bad to you and then kill you, getting in the van just makes their job easier. And while being cooperative is generally encouraged in polite society, in this instance I think Miss Manners would give you a pass.

If it’s just to do something bad to you, under the threat that they will kill you if you don’t cooperate, then the calculus is a little more complicated, but not much more. Think about it for a second. They don’t want to kill you. And they certainly don’t want to shoot you in public. Their whole goal is to get you somewhere private (the van) so that they can do something that is not killing you. Whatever that something is, shooting you in public doesn’t help them accomplish it, so they really don’t have much of an incentive to shoot you if you don’t comply. In fact, they have a disincentive, which is that public murder will draw a lot of unwanted (and mostly negative) attention upon them.

So, what should you do instead of getting in the van? That’s easy. Run. Well, if you have something in your hand, throw it at their feet to distract them, then run. Sure, they might chase you, but you don’t have much to lose. Run in a random zig-zag so that if they do decide to shoot, they can’t easily aim. And shout “Fire!” while you’re doing it. That will draw a crowd. People love to see a fire. Then get somewhere as public as possible as quickly as possible.

I tell you all this so that you understand, when I do get in the van, I’m not doing it thoughtlessly.

Why do I get in? Well, first, this is not a usual situation. The drug dealers know my name, and they’re not targeting me at random. Despite my—in retrospect, overly optimistic—assurances to myself, they did indeed search the construction walkway and find my student ID, and they did indeed conclude that I’m the one who stole their diamonds. They’ve been staking out the school, probably for a couple weeks, looking for me and waiting for an opportunity to corner me in a situation like this.

So, if I run away, they’re not going to give up. They’re going to come after me again, and again, and again. What can I do? Go to the police? “Excuse me, officer, but I’m a secret agent, and I stole a bunch of uncut diamonds from
